Expired card: how to renew it in Málaga without complications

Editor: Christopher Araya Hidalgo · Reviewed by DGT-authorized medical team ·

Has your driving licence expired? We explain the legal consequences, the process to renew it in Málaga, and how to do it in under 20 minutes.

Discovering that your driving licence has expired often happens at the worst moment: before a trip, when taking the car to work, or when checking documentation for any procedure. Don’t panic — the process to renew it is simpler than it seems.

What happens if I drive with an expired licence?

Driving with an expired driving licence is classified as a serious offence under the Traffic Law. The consequences may include:

  • Fine of up to €500 according to Article 65 of the General Drivers’ Regulations
  • Seizure of the vehicle if the officer deems it necessary
  • Possible complications with insurance in the event of an accident

An expired licence does not automatically result in the withdrawal of the permit or the loss of points — you simply need to renew it as soon as possible.

Can I renew it even if it has been expired for a long time?

Yes. There is no deadline after expiry to carry out the renewal. You can renew your licence even if it has been expired for months or years. The only requirement is to pass the medical and psychological assessment at an authorised centre by the DGT.

What you need to renew the expired licence

  • Valid DNI or NIE
  • Expired licence (it must be presented)
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them regularly
  • No need to bring photos — we take them digitally at the centre

The process: less than 20 minutes

  1. Come to the centre (with or without an appointment)
  2. Medical and psychological assessment — vision test, reflexes, and psychological test
  3. Receive the provisional licence — valid for 6 months while the DGT processes the permanent one
  4. The permanent licence arrives at your home in a few weeks

You do not need to go to the Traffic Headquarters. We handle everything directly with the DGT.

How long does it take?

The assessment at the centre takes less than 20 minutes. You receive the provisional licence on the same day. The permanent licence usually arrives at your home in 3 to 6 weeks, although the exact timeframe depends on the DGT.

What is the validity of the renewed licence?

The duration of the renewed licence depends on your age and the type of permit:

Age / PermitValidity
Up to 65 years (B, A)10 years
Over 65 years (B, A)5 years
Permit C (truck)5 years
Permit D (bus)5 years

Do I need an appointment?

It is not mandatory. You can come directly to the centre. We recommend booking an appointment online to avoid possible waits, but it is not a requirement.
