What is a medical centre authorised by the DGT?

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is the competent authority in Spain for regulating medical recognition centres for drivers. To obtain authorisation, centres must meet a series of requirements:

• Approved equipment — visual, auditory, and psychotechnical measurement devices must be certified and calibrated periodically
• Qualified personnel — the examination must be conducted by doctors with specific qualifications for driver assessments
• Adequate facilities — the examination rooms must meet standards for space, lighting, and privacy
• Official registration — the centre must be registered in the Official Register of Recognition Centres of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters

Only authorised centres can issue the fitness report with official validity for processing the driving licence.

What happens if I am examined at a non-authorised centre?

If you undergo the examination at a centre that is not authorised by the DGT, the report has no legal validity. The DGT will not accept the documentation, and you will have to repeat the process at an authorised centre.

Additionally, some non-authorised centres or those with inadequate equipment may provide incorrect results, which can lead to further issues.

How to verify if a centre is authorised

You can check if a centre is authorised through the DGT electronic headquarters (sede.dgt.gob.es), where the official list of medical recognition centres by province is available.

You can also look for the following at the centre:

• It has the authorisation visibly displayed on its premises
• It issues the official provisional permit from the DGT at the time of the examination
• It communicates directly with the DGT without you having to undertake additional procedures

At a properly authorised centre, the examination includes all the tests required by the DGT:

1. Visual examination with approved equipment
2. Assessment of auditory capacity
3. Computerised psychotechnical test
4. General medical examination by a qualified physician
5. Issuance of the fitness report and the official provisional permit
