Do you have an appointment for the medical examination for the licence? We explain what tests are included, what documents to bring, and how to get there without nerves.

Many people arrive at the medical examination without knowing exactly what to expect. The good news: it’s a quick process, it doesn’t hurt, and you’ll be done in less than 20 minutes. Here’s everything you need to know to arrive calmly.

What is the medical examination for the driving licence?

It is an assessment of physical and psychological fitness required by the DGT to obtain, renew, or exchange a driving licence. It is not a complete medical examination — it is a specific review of the necessary capabilities to drive safely.

What tests are included

1. Vision test

This is the most important part of the examination. The following are evaluated:

  • Visual acuity of each eye separately and together
  • Visual field (peripheral vision)
  • Colour vision (distinction of colours, especially red and green)
  • Contrast sensitivity in some cases

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them. If you don’t wear them and need them, you may not pass this test.

2. Psychotechnical test

This evaluates cognitive and coordination abilities relevant to driving:

  • Reaction time — speed of response to stimuli
  • Bimanual coordination — coordination between both hands
  • Attention and concentration — ability to maintain focus
  • Visual memory in some protocols

No special preparation is required. Get a good night’s sleep beforehand and try to avoid arriving stressed.

3. General medical examination

The doctor conducts a basic assessment:

  • Blood pressure and heart rate
  • Examination of limbs and mobility
  • Review of relevant medical history
  • Evaluation of regular medication if applicable

4. Digital photograph

This is taken at the centre. There is no need to bring photos.

Tips for the day of the examination

Get a good night’s sleep the night before to improve reaction times in the psychotechnical test. It’s not mandatory, but it is advisable.

Do not consume alcohol in the hours leading up to the examination. Although there is no breathalyser test, it can affect your reaction times and the medical examination.

If you take regular medication, continue to do so as normal. Do not interrupt any treatment for the examination.

Arrive with enough time. The process lasts less than 20 minutes, but if you arrive very close to your appointment time, stress may affect the results.

What are the results like?

At the end of the examination, you will receive one of the following results:

  • Fit — a provisional driving permit is issued on the same day
  • Fit with restrictions — permit with conditions (mandatory use of glasses, more frequent check-ups, etc.)
  • Unfit — in specific cases; you can appeal or wait for a later review

The vast majority of people who come to renew their licence pass the examination without issues.

Do I need an appointment?

It is not mandatory — you can come directly. We recommend booking an appointment online to avoid waiting, especially during peak hours (Monday and Wednesday mornings).
