# Complete Guide to Obtaining a Hunting Firearm Licence (Category D) in Málaga What documentation do you need, what is included in the psychotechnical certificate, and where to process it.

If you practice hunting or wish to obtain a category D firearms licence, one of the essential requirements is the psychophysical fitness certificate. In this article, we explain what it is, what it includes, and how to obtain it in Málaga.

What is the category D firearms licence?

The category D firearms licence permits the possession and use of hunting weapons in Spain. It is issued by the Civil Guard and allows the holder to own hunting shotguns, rifles, and other firearms used for hunting activities.

To obtain this licence, it is necessary, among other requirements, to demonstrate psychophysical fitness through a certificate issued by an authorised medical centre.

Requirements to obtain the D licence

The main requirements are:

  1. Age of majority (18 years)
  2. No criminal record for intentional crimes
  3. Psychophysical fitness certificate — issued by an authorised centre
  4. Mandatory civil liability insurance for hunting weapons
  5. Payment of the corresponding fee to the Civil Guard

The psychotechnical certificate: what it evaluates

The psychophysical assessment for firearms is similar to that for a driving licence and includes:

  • Visual examination — visual acuity and field of vision
  • Psychotechnical test — reaction time, emotional stability, and cognitive abilities
  • General medical examination — ruling out diseases that may pose a risk in handling firearms
  • Basic psychological assessment — emotional balance and absence of disorders that contraindicate firearm possession

The assessment lasts less than 20 minutes and the certificate is issued immediately.

Required documentation

For the assessment, you need to bring:

  • Valid ID card, residence permit, or passport
  • Glasses if you usually wear them

It is not necessary to bring a photograph: it will be taken at the centre.

How long is the certificate valid?

The psychotechnical certificate for firearms has a validity of 5 years for the first licence. For renewals, the validity may vary depending on the applicant’s age, being 5 years up to 60 years and 2 years thereafter.

Complete process to obtain the licence

  1. Obtain the psychotechnical certificate at an authorised centre (like ours)
  2. Gather the documentation required by the Civil Guard: ID, medical certificate, proof of payment of fees, and civil liability insurance
  3. Submit the application at the Civil Guard station in your area
  4. Collect the licence once approved

Do you need to renew the licence?

Yes. The category D firearms licence has a set validity period and must be renewed periodically. For renewal, a new updated psychophysical assessment is required.
