Can the medical examination for the licence be done without an appointment?

Editor: Christopher Araya Hidalgo · Reviewed by DGT-authorized medical team ·

Are you in a hurry to renew your driving licence? We explain whether it is possible to visit the medical centre without an appointment in Málaga and when it is best to book.

One of the most common questions we receive is whether it is necessary to book an appointment to renew your driving licence. The short answer is it is not mandatory, but there are nuances worth knowing.

Is booking an appointment mandatory?

No. At our centre in Málaga, you can walk in without an appointment and have your medical examination on the same day. We are a continuous care centre throughout our business hours.

When is it advisable to book an appointment?

Although it is not mandatory, booking an appointment has important advantages:

  • Avoid waiting — if you come during a peak time (Monday mornings, end of the month), there may be a queue
  • Choose your time — you can fit the visit into your schedule without uncertainty
  • More peace of mind — you know exactly when you will be seen

Booking takes seconds at Calendly or via WhatsApp.

When is demand usually higher?

The times of highest demand at medical examination centres are:

  • Monday mornings — the start of the week with a backlog of weekend urgencies
  • Last days of the month — many people wait until the last moment before their licence expires
  • January and September — the start of the year and return from holidays
  • Local holidays — the day before or after a holiday usually sees higher demand

How long does the visit last?

The complete examination lasts less than 20 minutes. It includes:

  • Registration and verification of documentation
  • Visual and auditory tests
  • Psychotechnical test on a computer
  • Medical examination
  • Issuance of the provisional licence

You do not need to prepare or fast. Come as you usually are.

What happens if I come without an appointment and there is a wait?

If there are patients ahead of you, we will inform you of the estimated waiting time so you can decide whether to wait or prefer to book for another time. We aim for no patient to wait more than 20-30 minutes.

Opening hours

Our current hours are:

  • Monday to Thursday: 10:00 – 14:00 and 17:00 – 20:00
  • Friday: 10:00 – 14:00
  • Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: closed

How to book an appointment in under 1 minute

If you prefer to secure a time, you can book in two ways:

  1. Calendly — choose the day and time directly from the website, no calls needed
  2. WhatsApp — message us and we will confirm availability in minutes

Documentation you need to bring

Whether with or without an appointment, remember to bring:

  • Valid ID or NIE
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving

You do not need to bring a photo or the previous licence.
