Private Security Tip: What it is and How to Obtain the Psychotechnical Certificate
Everything about the Private Security Professional Identification Card (TIP): requirements, mandatory psychotechnical certificate, and how to process it in Málaga.
If you work or want to work in the private security sector in Spain, the Professional Identification Card (TIP) is an essential document. One of the requirements to obtain it is the certificate of psychophysical fitness. In this article, we explain everything.
What is the TIP for private security?
The Professional Identification Card (TIP) is the document that certifies that a person is qualified to carry out private security activities in Spain. It is issued by the General Directorate of the Police and is mandatory for working as:
- Security guard
- Private escort
- Bodyguard
- Head of security
- Explosives detector
- Other specialisations in the sector
Requirements to obtain the TIP
To obtain the TIP, it is necessary to meet, among others, the following requirements:
- Spanish nationality or that of a member state of the EU
- Legal age (18 years)
- No criminal record for intentional crimes
- Specific training — qualification or certificate of professionalism in private security
- Certificate of psychophysical fitness — issued by an authorised medical centre
- Pass the aptitude tests established by the DGP
The psychotechnical certificate for the TIP
The psychophysical assessment is one of the requirements that generates the most doubts. It is issued by a medical centre authorised by the General Directorate of the Police and includes:
Physical examination
- Visual assessment (acuity and field of vision)
- Hearing ability
- Cardiovascular system and blood pressure
- Musculoskeletal system — especially of the hands and upper limbs
- Assessment of diseases that may affect professional practice
Psychological evaluation
- Personality test
- Emotional stability and impulse control
- Ability to concentrate and pay attention under pressure
- Absence of psychopathological disorders
The psychological evaluation for the TIP is more thorough than that for a driving licence, given the professional profile being certified.
How long does the assessment take?
The assessment is carried out in a single visit. The total time is less than 20 minutes for the medical part and the basic psychotechnical test. The certificate is issued on the spot.
Required documentation
- Valid DNI or NIE
- Official application for the permit (form from the National Police)
Renewal of the TIP
The TIP is valid for 5 years. To renew it, it is necessary to present the updated certificate of psychophysical fitness again, in addition to proving the required continuous training.
Application for the TIP: procedure
- Obtain the psychotechnical certificate from an authorised medical centre
- Complete the training in private security if you do not have it yet
- Submit the documentation at the corresponding Police Station or through the electronic headquarters of the DGP
- Wait for the resolution — the usual timeframe is several weeks
Why choose an authorised centre
The psychotechnical certificate is only valid if issued by a centre expressly authorised by the General Directorate of the Police. At our centre in Málaga, we are authorised to issue these certificates, and we do so quickly and without complications.
